The small SSD is used for system and the HD is used for /home partition. Laptop resources: Asus ZenBook UX32V - Produced in 2012 dual-core Ivy Bridge 1.9GHz Intel Core i7-3517U processor 4GB ram 1600MHz DDR3 2GB(NON-REMOVABLE) + 2GB(REMOVABLE), max 10GB Expand with: 4GB DDR3 1600MT/s Non-ECC Unbuffered SODIMM CL11 1RX8 1.5V 204-pin KVR16S11S8/4 or 8GB DDR3 1600MT/s Non-ECC Unbuffered SODIMM CL11 2RX8 1.5V 204-pin KVR16S11/8 Ivy Bridge does not support 16GB modules therefore 10 GB max ram. 24GB SSD 500GB hard drive 6GB/s (SATA 3) 5400RPM 13.3-inch WideScreen (11.3"x7.1") WUXGA (1920x1080) Full HD Connector Type: 30pin LED LCD Description: B133HAN03 1920x1080 display with nvidea GEFORCE GT 620M.1GB controller 2.4 and 5GHZ wifi 802.11a/b/g/n SD card slot 3 USB connectors HDMI connector (acts as second screen when connected) mini VGA connector Headphone connector An integrated webcam and microphone Bluetooth 4.0 ZENBOOK UX32V Charger: 19V 2.37A 45W Battery Model : C23-UX32 6250 mAh 7.4 V 48 Wh Li-polymer 4cells ========================================================================= Put ISO for Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon onto a USB dongle. Insert USB drive into port on laptop. Power up laptop while hitting ESC key (you should see boot menu pop up). (F2 during powerup will get you into the bios if needed). Select the EUFI:KingstonDataTraveller option. (your USB device) Start Linux Mint 21 (this will boot off the USB device) Double Click on the desktop icon to install Linux Mint pick English English US keyboard Select connect to network ( in my case ve7it-Madrona ) enter wifi password law.....kin click continue select install multimedia codecs, continue select "something else" option to set up unique partions select /dev/sda and click on new partition table double click on freespace under /dev/sda default size of 500108MB primary checked beginning of this space checked use as ext4 journaling file system mount point /home select /dev/sdb and click on new partition table double click on freespace under /dev/sdb size to 539MB primary checked beginning of this space checked use as EFI system partition double click on freespace under /dev/sdb1 default size of 23477MB primary checked beginning of this space checked use as ext4 journaling file system mount point / change device for boot loader installation to /dev/sdb click on install now after reading warnings... continue pick time zone Vancouver by clicking on map, continue fill in user information... Your Name: lg You computers name: Asus-LT Pick a user name: lg Choose a password: ....... Confirm your password: ....... Select require password to login option, continue wait for files to copy from USB device to SSD in laptop Select restart now remove USB drive when requested... enter select Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon on grub boot menu (if displayed) login with password close welcome to mint window in terminal window... (update to latest packages) sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade You now have a clean updated Mint Installation. Be aware of how much software you add to system as the SSD only has about 12GB free. Check using "df -h" in a terminal window. You should have the entire 500GB free for the /home directory. If you need more space on the SSD drive, you can remove some apps like libreoffice (word processor, spreadsheet etc) thunderbird (email) if you dont plan on using them menu/preferences/screensaver (I dont like screensaver on) delay before starting screensvaer - never uncheck both lock settings in file browser edit/preferences set list view ============================ optional=================================== install any extra programs you want on machine... you can use synaptic package manager or command line with apt sudo apt install gkrellm menu/preferences/startup applications ... add gkrellm config.. under properties tab check do not include on taskbar config.. under properties tab check do not include on pager config.. under builtins/sensors/temp check core 0 and core 1 config.. under builtins/sensors/fans check cpu_fan config.. under builtins/sensors/voltages check BAT0 config.. under builtins/clock select last display format with %M for 24hr config.. under builtins/CPU select composite, uncheck others config.. under builtins/proc uncheck enable config.. under builtins/net uncheck enable timer button config.. under builtins/mail uncheck enable mailcheck config.. under builtins/battery check enable battery config.. under builtins/uptime uncheck enable uptime
