- you will need to install ifuse using pacman of other package installer
- useful hints on dealing with apple devices under arch...

- turn on ipad, plug in usb cable to ipad
- on the ipad, let the popup know the linux computer is trusted

- on the linux box 
modprobe fuse
idevicepair pair
mkdir ~/ipad
ifuse ~/ipad

-start nemo or other file browser .... you should see ipad listed under devices

-copy and paste files between the ipad and linux
-pictures are located in several places... you will have to go through the
-directory structure available in nemo.. what a dogs breakfast
ie:
    DCIM/100Apple/                                  398 pix
    PhotoData/Sync/100SINCD                        1841 pix
    PhotoCloudSharingData/1961165470/..../100Cloud   16 pix
    PhotoStreamData/1961165470/100APPLE             699 pix
    PhotoStreamData/1961165470/101APPLE             274 pix

-dont forget to unmount device in nemo or...
umount ~/ipad

-shotwell was touted on the interent to locate and fetch pix off the ipad..
 in my experience, it is a waste of time.. it only found the pictures under DCIM/
